BACKGROUND
Kia ora and welcome to Aorangi Experiences, unique New Zealand hikes and guided walks in the central North Island of New Zealand.
Hikoi ki Paerau – “A walk into the distance, or time.” The name itself evokes a picture in your mind. It evokes a feeling of discovery and exploration.
Hundreds of years ago the great Maori explorer, Tamatea Pokai Whenua, came to the maunga, or mountain, of Aorangi, in the Rangitikei District on the central North Island of Aotearoa, (New Zealand), not knowing that one day his descendants would settle the areas in it’s shadow.
He no doubt felt the depth of silence on the summit. He would have heard the wind sighing through the tussock, and the chatter of the birds of the forest. It was here that he left the sacred lizard, Pohokura, as a guardian.
A view through the trees of the top of Mt. Aorangi, the place of the guardian, Pohokura, the sacred lizard. A place wrapped in legend.
Let us – Aorangi Experiences – share a Hikoi with you. Much more than bush walks or hikes, these are day long journeys sharing the land, legends, culture and unique history of Aorangi and the Tangata Whenua – the Maori people of the land of New Zealand.
This is a unique New Zealand, (Aotearoa), hiking experience for people interested in things Maori, and that cultures interaction with the geology and flora and fauna of this remarkable piece of New Zealand.
