Why do a Hikoi?
Hikoi ki Paerau is a unique opportunity to interact with Tangata Whenua in a natural way.

This is an exclusive experience. The maunga, or mountain, Aorangi, has been under the guardianship of the people of Ngati Hinemanu for centuries. Guardianship is a key word, as ownership is not recognised as in the European sense.

Your hiking experience will be personal and rewarding, with a small group and guides, normally no more than 10 people in total.

There is NO public right of access to Aorangi, meaning that you are well away from the crowds and consequent distractions. It will be only you, the small group you are with, your guides, and the Mountain.
How fit do I need to be?
An absolute minimum of an average level of fitness is required.  Some of the climb is quite steep, which can be hard on the calves and lungs, while the descent can be hard on knees.   This is not a walk, rather this is a hike. We recommend that clients that have knee or ankle problems take suitable medication with them.
What if I have special dietary needs?
If you do have certain dietary requirements, please let us know in advance so our chefs can pack you a suitable lunch.
What clothing and equipment do I require?
We recommend that you wear a pair of sturdy walking shoes or boots.  Running shoes or sneakers can be very slippery.

New Zealand weather is very changeable. Suitable rain gear such as a waterproof parka should be carried in a day pack. You will also be required to carry a water bottle, rain gear and other clothing you may wish to take in this day pack.

We recommend that you take suitable warm clothing, preferably either woollen, polypropylene or polar fleece.
What is the weather likely to be like?
New Zealand weather is highly changeable.  We operate hikois from October to late April - that is early spring to late autumn.  As a rule always be prepared for the weather to change to the worst.
Is there accommodation available in the area?
We suggest that you book accommodation at River Valley Lodge. The Riverside cabins with private bathrooms are just the place for weary walkers. Other activities in the area may also be booked through the booking system set out on the River Valley website..
Where else can I find information about what there is available within the Rangitikei District?
We suggest that if you do not get sufficient information from the River Valley website, then you should visit www.rangitikei.com
